Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine appears effective against mutation in new coronavirus variants -study

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine appeared to work against a key mutation in the highly transmissible new variants of the coronavirus discovered in the UK and South Africa, according to a laboratory study conducted by the U.S. drugmaker.

The not-yet peer reviewed study by Pfizer and scientists from the University of Texas Medical Branch indicated the vaccine was effective in neutralizing virus with the so-called N501Y mutation of the spike protein.

The mutation could be responsible for greater transmissibility and there had been concern it could also make the virus escape antibody neutralization elicited by the vaccine, said Phil Dormitzer, one of Pfizer's top viral vaccine scientists.

UK approves the Moderna vaccine.

I'm quite astounded by the numbers, the UK has bought at least 17 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, to go with at least 340 million doses of the other vaccines.

367 million doses for 68 million people? (according to Sky + gov.uk) Maybe that's why President Squirrel is so lackadaisical in ordering vaccines, he's hoping for donations or subsidised cheap vaccine from places like the UK.

Those that chose the wait and see approach might just be quite happy.

Nearly two dozen nursing home residents in Norway die within days of getting COVID vaccine

Nearly two dozen nursing home residents in Norway died within days of receiving their first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine, triggering a warning from health officials for sick patients over the age of 80 years old.

The Norwegian Medicines Agency in a press release on Friday revealed 23 patients died shortly after being stuck with the Pfizer/BioNTech shot for coronavirus. Of those deaths, 13 have been autopsied, with results suggesting that common side effects from the vaccine likely caused the high death toll.

Jesus Christ, but you’re a moron.

1. It takes seven days for the vaccine to become effective.

2. The Norwegians are saying there is no clear connection as they have up to 400 old people deaths per week during winter even in normal times.

Doctors in Norway have been told to conduct more thorough evaluations of very frail elderly patients in line to receive the Pfizer BioNTec vaccine against covid-19, following the deaths of 23 patients shortly after receiving the vaccine.

“It may be a coincidence, but we aren’t sure,” Steinar Madsen, medical director of the Norwegian Medicines Agency (NOMA), told The BMJ. “There is no certain connection between these deaths and the vaccine.”

The agency has investigated 13 of the deaths so far and concluded that common adverse reactions of mRNA vaccines, such as fever, nausea, and diarrhoea, may have contributed to fatal outcomes in some of the frail patients.

“There is a possibility that these common adverse reactions, that are not dangerous in fitter, younger patients and are not unusual with vaccines, may aggravate underlying disease in the elderly,” Madsen said. “We are not alarmed or worried about this, because these are very rare occurrences and they occurred in very frail patients with very serious disease,” he emphasised. “We are now asking for doctors to continue with the vaccination, but to carry out extra evaluation of very sick people whose underlying condition might be aggravated by it.” This evaluation includes discussing the risks and benefits of vaccination with the patient and their families to decide whether or not vaccination is the best course.

More than 20 000 doses of the vaccine have been administered over the past few weeks in Norway and around 400 deaths normally occur among care home residents every week.

You sound like you own shares in Pfizer you're so one-sided....

So basically it's ok for younger fitter people according to your article, but older people might die from taking the vaccine (y) Sorry grandma.

Like I said, I prefer the wait and see approach, given that, you know, we just don't know what the long term (or in this case short term) effects will be.

People are welcome to take it if they like, more power to ya!

If it proves to be safe then there will be more than enough waiting for me when others have taken it.
Unless you die from Covid before getting vaccinated.

Of the countries I am following, these are quite deep in the kak (numbers are deaths per million per day, averaged over five days).

Portugal 19
UK 18
Germany 10
Mexico 9
USA 9
SA 9

Only the UK has been worse off than Portugal and that was on 15 Jan 2021 when they hit 20.

Interesting to note that during the first wave, Portugal and Germany were of the lowest. I dread to think what is going to happen if the virus gets going in places like NZ.

It is getting really bad. My neighbour passed away a few days ago. It looks like 2021 might be worse than 2020.
