In summary:
  • Replacement of the entire Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets -- this is their primary objective.
  • Abilities similar to space shuttle, except much more capacity and to take over Dragon Crew.
  • They've also talked about earth travel e.g. 1 hour commute from US to Australia with a starship that is rapidly reusable like jetliners and multiple trips per day.
  • Ability to refuel in space
  • Vehicle to travel to the moon to set up a base on the moon
  • Finally as part of fleet of over a thousands starships to go to Mars and establish a permanent colony there.
So, a space truck.

Starman Just Made his Closest Approach to Mars
On February 6th, 2018, SpaceX successfully launched its Falcon Heavy rocket, the most powerful launch vehicle in their rocket family, and in service today. Not only was this a major milestone for SpaceX, it was also the biggest public relations coup ever orchestrated by Musk. For this launch, Musk decided that the payload would be his cherry Tesla Roadster with a SpaceX spacesuit (affectionately named “Starman”) at the wheel.

Those who watched the live footage of the event (or caught the compilation video released shortly after) are not likely to forget Starman and the Roadster orbiting Earth as David Bowie played in the background. At the time, it was also anticipated that Starman and the Roadster would eventually make a close pass of Mars. Two years after launch, Starman finally accomplished a flyby of the Red Planet!

SpaceX is planning to launch the 14th batch of Starlink satellites atop a Falcon 9 rocket this weekend, from Cape Canaveral for the company’s broadband network in a mission designated Starlink 14.

SpaceX confirmed that the liftoff will take place on Sunday, 18 October 2020 at 8:25 Eastern Time (ET). For SA viewers, that would be Sunday at 14:24 South African Standard Time (SAST).

US military are funding SpaceX research work to deliver goods within an hour to any point on the planet e.g. to move military equipment.
The spin off benefits are obvious; imagine hopping on a rocket and arriving at your holiday / work destination in an hour.

Side note:
the Boca Chica facility is also underway with the development of manufacturing fuels using wind turbines, e.g. oxygen, methane (from CO2)...

It's for cargo though. Not sure a human will enjoy the g-force.

The stated goal includes an alternative to long distance flights.
The g-forces for inter continental travel (i.e. not space travel) will be well within the tolerance for most people.

SpaceX Starship Passes Static Fire Test With Three Raptor Engines, Finally Gets Nose Cone!
It’s beginning to look like SpaceX will attempt to make the 15 km (9.3 mi) hop test before Christmas! After two successful 150 m (~500 ft) hops with the SN5 and SN6 prototypes, engineers at SpaceX’s Boca Chica launch facility in South Texas rolled out the SN8 – the first Starship prototype to have three Raptor engines. But before the SN8 can conduct a high-altitude test flight, the engineers needed to run a static fire test.

This test is crucial to ensuring that the Starship‘s interior plumbing can handle its cryogenic propellants, and is the last milestone before the Starship can conduct a high-altitude flight. On the evening of Tuesday, October 20th, that’s exactly what they did! At 3:13 AM local time (01:13 AM PDT; 04:13 AM EDT), the SN8 fired up its three Raptor engines and kept firing them for several seconds straight.

Although SpaceX has not yet released a statement about the test, footage captured near the launch facility by NASA Spaceflight’s Mary McConnaughey (aka. @BocaChicaGal) would suggest that it was a success. The video of the event (posted below) shows the engine being ignited at 2h27m12s after several minutes of venting and remaining lit for several seconds.

SpaceX will not recognise international law on Mars, according to the Terms of Service of its Starlink internet project.

Elon Musk’s space company will instead reportedly adhere to a set of “self-governing principles" that will be defined at the time of Martian settlement.
