Shall we create a thread where members can have a go at each other rather than screwing up potentially interesting threads. I don't want this site to end up like mybb so would like to try something different. We can't all get along and agree on everything but maybe we can channel it differently?

Is this MyBB version 2.0?
Either free speech is protected or its not.
Is it not better to channel arguments to a dedicated thread? It's not fair to other members to trash threads imo. But if you feel that was wrong I can reverse it. I'm still trying to figure this out and find a balance.

No worries; it's your site, and the choice is simple; you either go whole hog with policing and get labelled unfair, or you narrowly define what's permissible and avoid the need to police anything but what a majority would agree is unacceptable.

As example; the only country with true free speech is the USA, and it's defines as:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

A few narrow categories of speech are not protected from government restrictions; they are:
  • Incitement,
  • Defamation,
  • Fraud,
  • Obscenity, legal concept used to characterise certain (particularly sexual) material as offensive to the public sense of decency.
  • Child pornography,
  • Fighting words i.e. written or spoken words intended to incite hatred or violence from their target.
  • Threats.

However the freedom to insult is possibly the greatest test of free speech; it's that which proves that South Africa doesn't protect free speech.

I prefer thinking of it as OUR site.

I don't want to police this site and I also don't like what happened to me and other at mybb. So far there are no ads, mods and nearly no rules. The only rules so far are follow the SA law and no porn.

But I'd like to figure out how to deal with arguments. It often got ugly and lead to issues over there. That's why I suggested (and acted on) having an argument thread.

Policing would be too much work, and you'll never win.
I prefer to allow civil discourse to continue unabridged; as long as its within as you said; the limits of the law.

I don't see any easy way out of this; except to allow the discord to resolve itself; failing that people can choose to ignore someone permanently.
Is there not a similar option for a thread?.

On Twitter as example; I have a rule to never block anyone no matter how uncouth I may deem them to be, but instead I use the mute option; that way they can still monitor my tweets if they like but I can easily ignore theirs.

Thanks, will give it some thought.
