Midrand - For the dozens of women training at a shooting range near Johannesburg, learning how to use a gun has become a means of protection in a country where a woman is murdered every three hours.

For the first time in her life, Ntando Mthembu holds a revolver in her hands. Without hesitating she fires 10 bullets towards a cardboard target.

Last November Mthembu's cousin, left alone in a house for several hours, was gang-raped and murdered.

"Before it happens to me, I want to be prepared," said 33-year-old Mthembu.

South Africa is rated among the most violent countries on Earth, and homicide rates are constantly increasing.

But I don’t support unstable cunts running around armed to the teeth, nor do I support vigilante style “justice”. The reason I choose not to own a firearm is not because I’m scared of one or worry that I won’t have the stones to use it when needed, but because I don’t wish to carry it with me 24/7, with a round in the chamber, because if you don’t do that you’re probably wasting your time. I can’t stand arseholes who insist on waving firearms around to make up for their deficiencies, and I can't stand pricks who can only see their own point of view. And finally I really dislike tossers who put words in my mouth and judge me based on their blinkered one dimensional view of life.

what stops a woman who wishes to have a firearm from obtaining one coupled with the license? Many countries have large sections of the civilian population with firearms and no "second amendment style law" exists in those countries. The whole term "second amendment style law" suggests somebody who is entirely unfamiliar with what the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution says (or is) and a total lack of basic comprehension of what a law is.

Asking the question at this juncture rather than stating a position. I am all in favour of repealing SAs gun control legislation and replacing it with an insurance system.

You don't understand what the second amendment means, nor do you understand what most of these changes that you're proposing would actually bring in a country like South Africa with near non-existent law enforcement, outright theft of weapons from army/police, etc., which will just start an arms race, the US kind of already has it.

Note I am American-Austrian, the 1st and 14th place for most guns per 100 civilians, pretty much every male family member I have in Austria posses a weapon after their military service, and even I see an issue with making guns even more commonplace than they are now in such a society as here.

Switzerland, Canada, Finland, Norway, Sweden have high levels of firearm ownership and little of the stupidity that the US has.
SAs gun legislation is daft and encouraging responsible firearm possession including more than 100 hours training and annual proficiency assessment could make a major impact. However to do this you'd need to ensure proper non-racialism and even address a gender trope problem.
