Yup, the Great Game... and I'll just add that for this history nerd it's just brilliant that someone else knew that.
Just picked it up from the interwebs, don't really know anything about it other than SA was also fucked over in those years.

To be honest, the current situation in Afghanistan makes South Africa's problems seem somewhat like first-world issues. Getting access to a functioning home affairs etc must really be the last thing on the minds of citizens there now.
We've had our own version of what's happening in AFG now.

Some of us are old enough to have been the boots on the ground in Namibia through the last days of Resolution 435 and the NY Accords.

Back and forth between England and Russia that went on for nearly a hundred years. The Afghans changed alliance when it suited them and the conflict basically shaped the area we call Afghanistan now.

Jip. 1982 en 1983. Was seker in totaal so 14 maande in Angola. Noord van Ruakana en ook Rundu
Landed at Grootfontein, got in the back of a Samil that drove us north, stopping to drop troops off at camps along the way... Last off the back of the Samil in... Ruakana.

Spent a couple of days there before being sent to Oshakati... Mostly remember running in the evenings with the SAKK guys and amputating a kid's finger.
