my understanding - limited as it is - is that the mechanics underlying semi-automatic shotguns is simply inherently constrained and there isn't a decent trade off to be made.
a burley trained cop with a pump action has considerable capability to fire off shells with non-lethal intent in a riot situation
(the area of law enforcement I am most familiar with is public order policing)
again though its strong evidence that well disciplined and properly trained users of a less lethal

I find the SRM Arms Model 1216 an interesting proposition in so far as a semi-automatic shotgun goes and its interested me as a weapon for several years. One of the things most intriguing about it is four tube setup enabling breaching shells, "bean bag" shells, tear gas shells and standard birdshot and you don't need the burley marksman to handle the weapon. The cost dynamics are generally insane and I strongly suspect that there is refinement to be made and I think it would be a totally daft option for SAPS and the like.

Try using the (SAP issue) Browning semi-auto from the roof opening in a Casspir and then try again with a Berreta pump. You’ll discover you can put a lot more lead down range with the pump action.

But you’re only going to be shooting paper and your empty beer bottles that don’t shoot back so a jam or trying to reload the semi (after 3 rounds iirc) in the dark on the back of a moving vehicle may as well be like science fiction to you.

any idea why SAPS ever bought the Browning? I am not aware of a single person who has said anything favorable to their use. I.e. does it have any advantage when used as a secondary weapon? Could SADF infantry familiar with R1s and R4s move over more aptly.
As I've said witnessing the efficacy of SAPS visipol with pump action is quite a sight ...
but honestly I don't most of our detectives will be able to use the pump action ...
essentially was it just a police procurement snafu or is there some logic?

I call bullchit, all you have to do with a semi is pull the trigger, with a pump you literally have to pump back and forth to chamber a new shell. Within that time you could have gotten off three shots from a semi.
