I have this little greenhouse and need to put in shelves. These guys sell these shelves for this insane amount (R2,100 for one side!). Just looks like PVC piping. What cheap shelving ideas do you have?

Maybe you're looking at the building type of PVC fittings, look at the irrigation type of PVC fittings it's a lot cheaper. Effast sells them there in stikland just off the N1.

Little update on the plants
The one in the small pot will be grown as a bonsai plant.

Nice. What is your plan regarding lighting and how long will you veg for? I have to start with the mainline of the special queen and then start the bonsai training.
I am an absolute n00b. I got this grow light.

Just remember as soon as the plant receive 12 hours or less of light it will go into flower.

I currently use a 150w LED I bought from ACDC for about R300 and it seems to keep them awake when needed.

Goodluck and keep us updated.

Hello my comrades of the dirt. I have had my nose buried in the books for a couple of days and while researching what would be the most efficient light setup I narrowed it down to LEDS as I prefer the safety, reduced power consumption and initial setup cost.

If you have any DIY skills I would recommend looking into COB LEDS, they are pretty cheap and you can decide how you want to set them up.

1591778122064.png

  • Full Spectrum AC COB LED 50W
  • Power: 50 Watt (Can fluctuate depending on heat levels)
  • Color Temperature:380nm-840nm
  • Emitting Color: Full spectrum
  • Color Rendering Index(Ra):80
  • Luminous Flux(lm):4000lm
  • Optical Attenuation(%):0.3
  • Operating Temperature(℃):-20 – 60
  • Storage Temperature(℃):-40 – 100
  • Luminous efficiency:80Lm/W
  • Wavelength:380-840 nm
  • Chip:Bridgelux / Epistar / Epileds / Sanan
  • Working Voltage: AC220-230V

I've ordered 16 units, designing the mounting plate/heatsink as we speak as these need some sort of cooling.

Please note I have no affiliation to these guys I just watch some of their content and found it quite nice that we have local talent investing in these technologies.

Yes I know they are currently out of stock but it is just an indication of how much it would cost and the specifications of the device.

If you're patient you could order them from AliExpress but I don't know how much you'd pay for import tax and duties.

These COB lights take 220v straight onto the board and can consume up to 50W providing the cooling is sufficient.

I see alot of forums stating you need a driver to take the voltage from 220/240v and convert it from Alternating Current (AC) into Direct Current (DC)

I can assure you that is not required as these are designed to take 220V (AC) straight from the wall.

They are full spectrum as well meaning you can use them throughout the plants life.

I will update this thread with designs of the backplate/heatsink, I'm just using a plate of aluminum and drilling holes in them to mount the COBS and also to dissapate heat.

Please note for everyone who wants to attempt this please ensure that you use lead free solder, not only is the fumes toxic but they can result in brittle connections and cause headaches when trying to diagnose a COB that just won't turn on.

I don't understand how websites like this are allowed to sell clones? We're also taking their word that the clones are whatever they say they are.

I'm not worried just curious as to how these companies are allowed to operate? I mean isn't it considered illegal?

I have rosemary, oreganum and thyme in a box

6E4911B3-09FA-462C-8996-366AF0EDCF1D.jpeg

and the other box has radish seedlings sprouted from seeds after a week and half. Waiting for my carrot seeds to come up - may take 3 weeks.

and this shamrock from my godmother - I love unusual plants and it gives out red flowers

Have you heard of Margaret Roberts insecticide?
I make my own for aphids - garlic, cooking oil, dish liquid and water. It does work.

as for fungus, you do need a copper based powder for making sprayer mix. I’ll have to ask my mom what she uses as I can’t remember what it’s called.
