What happened? Old ticker?
very long story, but the shortest version.
on a wednesday night (a few months back) had severe chest pain and was literally paralysed in bed.
called a neighbor doctor - blood presurre was 228/124, heart rate was 106. he wanted me in hospital that night - instead i went to my gp on the friday. ecg showed recent heart attack and she wanted me to get to hospital.
i told her i'd go on the monday, as it was pointless lying in bed all weekend until the specialists returned to work on monday.
monday morning at around 4am i have a repeat of wednesday, paramedics arrive - they do another ecg, again another heart attack - ambulance arrives and off we go.
in the er i'm connected to an ecg, but nurse is puzzled - the declares the machine to be faulty and gets another. rinse & repeat.
she realises it's not the equipment that is faulty, but the patient.
off she dashes and arrives back shoving 2 tablets into my mouth. "chew and swallow" is all she says.
a doctor comes rushing in with a syringe, the size scared the bejesus out of me.
without a word, he rips my shirt up and stabs me in the stomach with the assegai he was wielding.
"we are going straight to theatre" he announces.
turns out i was midway thru a really bad heart attack while connected to the ecg- the injection was to stall cardiac arrest .
so this is heart attach number 4 in 5 days, each worse than the previous.
i have a valve replacement done + stent #2.
in icu i develop bronchial pneumonia - after 2 days my oxygen saturation is down to 74.
a decision is made to put me on a ventilator for a week to 10 days - but i simply refused to wake up again.
lots of tests and scans, everything is good, but im not waking up (this is a common thing - we wake up wnen we are ready).
10 weeks later i emerge from my slumber - as tho nothing happened. it was like i went to sleep one night & woke up again the next morning - i had no sense of loss of time, never suffered the very dreaded icu delirium most people do when under induced coma.
got discharged a week later.
spent 10 days in the maldives (call it rest and recuperation)
then went off to hong kong, cyprus & london (dealing with my mother's deceased estate)
i bid on the freddie mercury auction in london (via proxy) - wanted to bring back the gold records awarded for south africa.
partnered with multichoice - ownership was to go into some form of public trust or museum - multichoice would have right of possession for display purposes. we were to contribute 50/50 to the purchase price. they baled out at 4000 quid !
its a pity, would have been nice to bring them home.
