My sister has offered me cheap rental on a property she is thinking of buying, in Newlands, Cape Town.

But it comes with a pool. And I will be responsible.

My experiences with pools is absolutely zero. I can swim in them, either chlorine or salt water but maintaining them...

How much work is it to maintain a pool? 2 or 3 hours a week? More than that?

Are there people I can hire to do it?

(I hire a gardener and a house cleaner because somehow I never picked up those skills)

I’ve not bothered to take the cover off the pool this summer. For the number of times I use it, it’s just too much hassle, chemicals, cleaning, keeping the filter clean, get rid of leaves, topping it up and that’s not counting the electricity it uses.

Keeping it clean yourself is doable, but needs constant little bits of attention. You get it looking great and leave it for a few days cos you’re busy and the damn thing turns green.
