Between 16 and 30 people a day die of flu in South Africa. (6000 - 11 000 a year).
The official stats are usually
Influenza and pneumonia (J09-J18) at 18-21k / year. At 102k, with the measures that were taken, and that there is a vaccine, it's still about double the death rate of J09-J18.
But yeah, at this point we should be getting to you have been vaccinated, unless another major strain shows up that the vaccine does not really help with, should be getting on with our lives, and if you're at risk, you'll need to take precautions (which you should be doing either way in that category).
We still have mask mandates in public transit, hospitals, old age homes, and apothecaries (if one is in a shopping center, technically entire shopping center needs masks). Enforcement is a bit of an issue, it's random how compliant everyone is on the subway. Morning going to work it's usually everyone with mask, on the way back since I usually work a bit later, get a lot of foreigners and stuff, it's something like an 80% mask rate.
Leaving city limits, all mask mandates are dropped, so usually don't wear a mask when heading to family since usually only a handful of people on the bus, so can just spread out, then just put on mask again when crossing back into city limits (there's no announcement or anything, you just need to pay attention to signage on the side saying you've entered a district).
Still find it strange South Africa dropped everywhere instead of still trying to keep it for hospitals and old age homes as well if people already used to it and it's quite understandable to enforce there.
