So, there are some expensive ways to create a 3D scan of something. For big plants, a 3D point cloud scan. Costly and worth it for BIM, asset management and work.
But for personal, there are some software available, no cost and to 3D printing. From there, free software to make it work, barely or Fusion 360, now. I can help out.
There are also free software to do a Camera scan.

The above scanning was done by a P20 Pro, taking photos. The Owl turned out to be 210 photos to create the 3D mesh and scan.
Plus, any revenue from this will go to @biometrics for the site.

I'd like to know how to take any object, have it scanned, and printed. Are there services or is it still a DIY thing?

There are services and free software to do so and then create a .stl file and send it to your 3D printer. Only thing is the free software does not create the 3D Printer supports. Everything above, accept the Fusion 360 screenshot, was done with open source free software.
