Pfizer and Moderna uses mRNA. Now I'm certainly not well read on this, but I understand that mRNA issues instructions to your cells to produce the Covid-19 spike protein which your immune system then recognizes and attacks. There are many things happening in the immune system so I'm unsure of the detail.Oh.

J&J and Astra Zeneca uses older disabled virus technology specifically the AD26 platform. I think this is what you are thinking of.
In the cities we use Pfizer. For medical, police, teachers and people in rural areas they use J&J, since it's one dose it's more practical for various reasons.
Pfizer appears to be more effective than J&J though.
