The storm was the night before (when the Moskva was hit by the missiles), the swells were listed as being 2-3m.

All true, but IIRC the bad weather was first reported by the OSINT types as there were no satellite images due to cloud cover except for the radar (infrared? I don't exactly remember) generated sat image which just showed what was presumed to be the ship appeared to be on fire.
