No, I just like the ability to make a poster size print of a photo if it looks really good, not something you can do with snaps from a phone camera.

Neither of my "proper" cameras (a mirrorless and a DSLR) are all that expensive or new.

And done, this is all in EUR, best possible price I could get will be to the right, I paid a premium on basically all parts so it's in one place, brackets is my price, italic is best:

i7 12700 (365) 350 + 5 shipping, so 355, non K as overclock is 5-10% difference, not worth the +60 EUR / +15%; right now the price/performance is intel side here, around 15-20% faster than the 5700X with a ~10% price difference, without counting e-cores.
32GB CL16 (126) 110 but slightly looser timings, this was the biggest discrepancy imho
ASUS TUF B660 Plus WiFI D4 (181) 178 + 2 shipping, picked this as WiFi and higher possible memory OC profile, WiFi is when this gets relegated as a secondary later on
Noctua NH-U12S Redux (50) 50, could go stock, but this runs quieter
Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti VENTUS 3X 6G OC LHR (590) Asus has a 3 blower for 570 at another retailer, picked three over two blower just because of noise, could have gone smaller case if two blower instead. 3060 Ti is worth the 130 EUR (price difference of +28% is worth to me as ~30% higher performance base 3060 Ti, the higher texture rate should have a larger impact in VR and the memory bandwidth should definitely be better)
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB (99) this is on special on amazon., currently not worth the 40 EUR jump to PCIe 4, will upgrade later as will need more storage anyways, I am hitting 6TB of SSD storage in the house though...
Seasonic Focus Plus 1000 Gold (161) cheapest I could find, way over specced as fan curve is silent till 30% load, so need to be properly gaming for fan to spin, I currently undervolt laptop etc. to stop noise when working, fine with fans kicking in for a sec while compiling or something, just not constant, and my room is quite quiet. If someone only games, would have gone down to 600W I think. Also PSU is the only one I stick with brand.
Fractal Design Meshify 2 Black TG Dark (183) 142, could have gone quite a bit cheaper, e.g. wanted to get the compact at 127 but ended up deciding against it due to possibly going radiator later, cases you need to keep checking shipping cost and they pushed up price to 170+ in most, so rather went consolidated shipping.
-----
1755 + 35 shipping, so 1790'ish (R30k)
Could have gone to 1618 EUR + ~70 shipping, so 1690'ish (R28.4k), so ~6% saving, but this way one point of contact for all the parts and it's a very reputable seller that's a couple of roads away (I've dropped by the physical store before).

Why not wait for new GPU/CPU generation? GPU side Nvidia won't release 3070 and below before next year June I'd guess, they'll repeat what they did before, AMD is not competitive. Could have waited a little longer on GPU pricing to fall, probably another 5-10% probably. AMD not interested right now as I need the CUDA cores for some ML stuff, which is annoying, this is besides NVENC encoding for VR being substantially better (hopefully AMD make a better H265 encoder in the new gen).

CPU side, only AMD's new chip looks interesting, and then we're probably talking maybe 5% faster than the Intel equivalent single core, and I kind of doubt the price/performance to undercut by much, will probably be just slightly cheaper, not going to be worth the wait probably unless really wanting the single core crown, and I want a new PC now.

Everything should arrive end of the week/beginning of next.

Have you found that being so knowledgeable makes it more or less easy for you to pick computer hardware?
It makes it easier when I want to catch up and check. Tech used to move very slowly post 2011, and pandemic it did again, it was basically a dead market from April 2020-march 2022, pricing was so out of whack.

The topics interest me, and I'm probably going to be less on top of graphics cards again, this is like 2/3 hours research as I know what is important.

It's the same as I'll ask my med docs if what other doc said makes sense, they have an understanding of the topic and even if different field can generally give an opinion.

I'll ask another friend about cars, even though he stopped being a mechanic 7 years ago now because he built the base, he can catch up pretty quick and give a generally educated guess. Not to say cutting edge, just generally.

We all have people we ask about certain topics, in my circle I'm the hardware guy.
