It depends on the variant and level of illness (symptomatic, hospitalisation, death). It was 95% effective for severe illness for the Alpha variant. It seems to still be very effective for the new variants.

Correction, Alpha was the UK variant. It was 95% effective against the original non variant. Here is relevant data:

Seems about half of people get very sore arms. Mine was minor.
36% 1st dose
Mine was so sore I couldn't touch the spot. Although the injection itself I couldn't even feel.
My wife was the same. Couldn’t sleep on it it was so sore.
Same. Good thing I sleep on the other one.
