For 40 devices they need to put forward a project to fix it.

Do it right with FSMO role server being able to fail over to a replica. In a scenario like that you only need 1 virtual DC and a HyperV replication server. No AD replication. The environment is too small.

They're defying the use of AD and that environment sounds like a security nightmare.

Edit: Reconsidering actually. why not just put AD on Azure?

Myself, I won't touch that abomination, will just babysit it.

However, if they offer me good pay to sort it out, I will consider it.

I haven't got a cookin' clue what the OP's Reddit post is all about. I think I'd understand a Latvian recipe for brewing vodka before I understood what he's talking about.
