It’s the forum software Xenforo. Not sure if I can adjust it, will check. It is annoying.

Chat as in public live chat. But it won’t really be better than the chat room thread, we’re too small to make a live chat work,

No idea how those things work. Better not to break the forum. But 3 word at least makes sense.

Tbh, I'd not recommend doing so: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/fulltext-fine-tuning.html
You are also going to force a rebuild of full index. Another note is that lots of stop words have been added to mysql that help search if 4 char min, so you slow it down substantially.

Insane that Xenforo still doesn't have automatic wild card addition for more characters.
