Lots couldn't get help because of the lockdowns, more people died from overdose than car accidents and gun violence. That lockdown forced lack of access to help didn't happen in Europe it seems, they allowed for people to be able to still go seek help. Norway is the highest in Europe.

Canada also seems to have the problem, they jumped from 2k overdoses in 2015 to 7k in the span of 1 year since pandemic started.
All caused by drug over-prescribing, they then moved on to illegal drugs. Affects majority poorer people/places that have collapsed industry since only low paying job, but overall has to do with there having been a surge in illicit drug supply.

Health insurance in Europe substantially helps as can afford treatment.

They mentioned something similar to a chat I had with my mom once, US pain medication you're usually sent home with it, in Germany you're only really given pain meds while in hospital/doctor's office and are monitored, then only non-narcotic pain meds are allowed as a prescription. US has issue that pressure people to get a pill from a doctor, the marketing on TV and stuff substantially influences that, that type of add doesn't exist in most of Europe.
