Buzludzha
An abandoned futuristic megastructure in the mountains of Bulgaria is quietly becoming one of the most popular destinations for our community of reporters. This is Buzludzha, a colossal “white elephant“ Soviet palace set in a surreal landscape.

In June 1965, architecture firm William Pereira & Associates was asked to design UC San Diego’s main library, now known as Geisel Library -- named after children's book author "Dr. Seuss," Theodor Seuss Geisel. The building's distinctive inverted-pyramid architecture, described as occupying "a fascinating nexus between brutalism and futurism," has resulted in its being featured in the UC San Diego logo and becoming the most recognizable building on campus. Completed in 1961, the Milam Residence is an oceanfront house in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The home's architect Paul Rudolph designed almost 60 houses in Florida, developing a style that became known as "Sarasota Modern." This project was named one of Architectural Record's 20 "Record Houses" of 1963. In 2016, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. (Photo: Ezra Stoller)

In 1958, Minoru Yamasaki designed the McGregor Conference Center at Wayne State University in Detroit. The marble atrium with its pyramidal skylights is a highlight of this majestic building, from the architect who would go on to design the World Trade Center in New York. (Photo: Balthazar Korab)
