Some good news for South Africa’s Covid-19 vaccine rollout

South Africa finally received good news regarding its vaccination rollout, with the first batch of 325,260 Pfizer vaccines arriving in the country overnight.

Plans are in place to inoculate 16.5 million people from May to October with the aid of private healthcare providers, which will buy shots from the national government. This forms part of the phase 2 of the rollout, targeting vulnerable individuals and essential workers.

Phase 3 of the rollout, which will open up the shots to the rest of the country, are expected to start in November.

When I hear "plans" and "government" in the same sentence...
Even working weekends that is over 90k vaccinations a day, doable but I am not holding my breath.

It sucks that private companies can't buy vaccines. Discovery members would be nearly done by now.

The only people I know who are vaccinated are health workers. My dad and his fiancé got the J+J shot in recent weeks.

“When you go to get vaccinated, you must take proof of ID such as your ID card or book, drivers’ licence or passport. People who belong to a medical aid scheme should also take their medical aid card or other details.”

Haven't had a card for >10 years

Phase 1 of the rollout aimed to vaccinate 1.2 million healthcare workers by the end of May. Only 40% of this target has been reached, with a dismal daily average of doses administered standing at just over 5,400. This pace will need to be increased ten-fold if South Africa is to reach herd immunity before 2023.
