When my cat started scratching the couch I got him a catnip laced scratcher.

But I also painted chilli oil on the couch (dark colour, so it did not show).

He stopped scratching the couch.

I used a similar tactic with the electrical wires (extension cords etc) for my dog when she was a puppy, because she would chew them.
