My housemate is looking for a used small car with an automatic gearbox for max R100,000. She doesn't care about brand or looks, just reliability. She only drives to town and back so will do less than 5,000km a year. Around 100,000km on the clock max.

I'm thinking Hyundai...

What would you recommend?

Check out Daihatsu Sirion
My mother has one since 2004. Service and parts fairly cheap. Very comfy car

Yeah i would be looking at servicing costs and parts replacements
Something like a Toyota.
She doesnt need anything with a turbo so stay away from those as they're very expensive to replace.

I have an old 1998 Diahatsu Terios and its still strong, its all Toyota

Jip, at +-10 years, most plastic and rubber parts start to give in.

Was now thinking of the suzuki jumny, but they are over R100k.

Keep in mind German brands are expensive to maintain with the exception of VW.

Their resale value drops very quickly I would probably recommend Toyota, VW, KIA and Hyundai stay away from Nissan unless you need a bakkie or something.

I would probably recommend a Polo.

The auto requirement narrows your options substantially I am afraid.
A better starting point might be, what has she got at the moment and what doesn't she like about it?

I would avoid little auto cars made in the east, most of them use very old tech and can cost as much as the car to repair. That being said they have improved vastly and you can't really compare them to the horrid boxes of the past( 70's,80's and 90's).

I would recommend something like @satanboy 's suggestion of an older Merc, as long as has been checked out properly. Some of them are bought as retirement vehicle's and are very well looked after and have not been abused. If you can pick up one of those you have a winner.
